Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity
What does Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity, cigars and golf have in common? Thomas A. Huff (Tom) was instrumental in moving the Habitat mission forward in more ways than most realize. Not only did Tom donate his architectural services for nearly 300 Habitat homes, he participated in Habitat’s special events (one being our golf tournament) and he recommended our homeownership program to many.
For this story, we’d like to focus on one particular individual, Vince.
Tom and Vince shared a passion for cigars and spent time getting to know one another at the Tobacco Locker in Port Charlotte. These cigar lovers actually became great friends, and it wasn’t long before Tom realized Vince had a need for affordable housing and would make a fantastic Habitat homeowner.
Becoming a Habitat homeowner is a big step, and Tom finally convinced Vince to apply. After approval into our Habitat program, Vince worked diligently to meet the program requirements and has been a proud, successful Habitat homeowner since March 2015. When Vince was asked what it meant to be a Habitat homeowner, he stated, “It is an honor to be a Habitat homeowner and a huge help for me to move forward in my life and be successful.”
Sadly, Tom Huff passed away unexpectedly this past year; he will be missed by many but his legacy will live on. Bill and Lynn Davies, owners of Tobacco Locker, hold an annual golf tournament community fundraiser. This year, they chose Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity as the recipient. We are thankful for Bill and Lynn’s wish to honor Tom’s memory by contributing to our affiliate and assisting us with serving more Charlotte County families.
…one choice can effect change forever.
We are thankful that ONE very special person, Tom Huff, made Habitat his choice.
